The city is a busy place

City driving involves a variety of complex driving situations. Space, time, distances, a wide variety of vehicles, pedestrians, bicyclists, one-way, two-way streets, different schemes for lane travel, and traffic control all contribute to the challenge of driving in an urban environment.  As a driver your attention to detail, focus, and the ability to adapt to changes are the key to remaining safe in an urban environment.

challenges ASSOCIATED WITH URBAN DRIVING

  • Space is limited on city streets resulting in tighter roadways.
  • Reduce your speed. Command your lane if you are a larger vehicle
  • Analyze road situations and predict what might happen.
  • If possible, avoid situations that limit your visibility, such as driving behind large vehicles like delivery trucks or transit buses.
  • Exercise caution when changing lanes.

COVERING THE BRAKE

Picture
Cover braking provides a smooth transition from acceleration to braking and is effective for slowing in reduced stopping distances.
  • This method will improve your reaction time.
  • Don’t rest your foot on the brake pedal – could cause unnecessary wear.
  • “Riding” the brake causes the brake lights to activate, which could confuse other drivers around you.
Cover the brake when:
  1. Passing parked cars, especially when occupied.
  2. You see cars in front of you with their brake lights on.
  3. When approaching a traffic signal in a busy intersection, even when you have a green light.
  4. When noticing the pedestrian signals in your direction changing.

HEAVY TRAFFIC
When traffic is heavy, it makes it difficult to maintain a safe space cushion around your vehicle.
  1. Do your best to keep a safe distance in all your zones surrounding your vehicle.
  2. Watch for other vehicles encroaching on your safe space zones and adjust accordingly. Check your mirrors frequently. There are no surprises!
  3. Be extra vigilant for vehicles moving rapidly in heavy traffic.
  4. Be prepared to move or change lanes as needed if your lane becomes obstructed.
